Grace and Peace to you, members and friends of First Lutheran Church!

It is with great excitement and honor that I accept the call of God and your invitation to be the Pastor of First Lutheran Church! I am humbled by the opportunity before us all to work, serve and grow together in Christ. I already have great respect for the way in which you have been and continue to be the church.

Your call committee did an excellent job of articulating and representing you in the call process. I know that they were able to describe who I am to you and that the video I put together was shown at the congregational meeting you had, but let me also give you again a brief sketch of who I am and where I come.

For the past nine years my family has called Somers, Montana, home. Somers lies on the shores of Flathead Lake, just south of Kalispell, Montana or 45 minutes from Glacier National Park. My wife, Linden, and I have three children. Will and Charis are twins and are almost 16 years-old and will be sophomores in high school. Anna is 11 and will enter sixth grade this fall. Together, with our cat Oliver, we enjoy camping, gardening, exploring and playing games as a family. We are busy with all the life three children bring with them, and we find God’s rich grace to be ever present during this important time in our lives.

As for me, I am originally from Madison, Wisconsin. I was born and raised there and went to the University of Wisconsin. I am the eldest of three children and much of my family still resides in Madison. I went to seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, at Wartburg Theological Seminary. I did my internship in Seattle, Washington, and have been ordained for 19 years. I am a voracious reader (of all kinds), I enjoy cooking, golfing, gardening and seek to be active in God’s beautiful world. Finally, I also was formed by my experiences at Sky Ranch Lutheran Camp in Colorado (including meeting my wife Linden there).
I could say more but that is probably enough until we have the pleasure of meeting face to face in a few short weeks. It is my intention to officially begin with you on September 1st. However, I will be taking the first week and a half to settle into our new home and get our family situated in the area and at school. Therefore, I am going to look to have my first official day be Monday, September 12th but will be with you in worship on September 11th for “God’s Work, Our Hands” Sunday. I will also be working with the Synod office, and your council, to discuss an official installation date!

In closing, I want to again say how thankful and humbled I am to serve as your Pastor. The honor of being entrusted with God’s work in a community like yours is something that remains fresh and new as does the challenge of being the church today.

We sit at a pivotal point in the history of not just the Lutheran church but of much of “mainline” Protestantism throughout the country today. Our challenge and opportunity is to figure out how to share our faith in Jesus Christ in new and relevant ways that speak to the world around us. And we can do this! We are empowered by God’s grace, we are strengthened by our history and heritage, and with open hearts and minds, active hands and feet we can move into God’s promised future!
I’m excited to begin this journey with you and look forward to the relationships we will build with each other, the community and all with whom we minister.

In Peace, Pastor Andy Wendle
